What is The Historic Black KC Marketplace Sunday Edition of The KC STAR?

141-Years In The Making. This first-of-its-kind, black-owned business, and lifestyle edition of the “all-new” Kansas City Star Newspaper, and its digital/online forums as well.  The KC Star entered into this unique and historic partnership to express their apologies for their racists past, as well as to right their wrongs done to the black KC community at large, but also state once and for all, that there is a new, more-diverse, more-inclusive, and more conscious KC Star in town.

$1 Million:

The hope is to direct the KC Star’s nearly 4 million Sunday in-print, online, and digital readers to black KC businesses; for the first time in history this Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and into the 2021 Holiday Shopping Season.

The Kansas City Star newspaper has for 141 years been a driving force in shaping Kansas City and the region as a whole through news reporting and coverage of events, and it is about time their power has been harnessed for the betterment of the Black Kansas City Economic Community.

We applaud Mike Fannin, The KC Star, and ourselves, for –finally- making this a reality, and something we can be very proud of for years to come; as Kansas City, experiences an awakening, and enters into a Black Entrepreneurial Renaissance.

“[The KC Star]…it disenfranchised, ignored and scorned generations of Black Kansascitians.” –The New KC STAR

Mike Fannin, President, and Editor wrote in a six-part series: “Reporters felt regret that the papers’ historic coverage not only did a disservice to Black Kansascitians but also to white readers deprived of the opportunity to understand the true richness Black Citizens brought to Kansas City.”

TRUE DEI SUCCESS.

A true example of successful diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts (DEI), The Kansas City Star paper is walking the talk; and by partnering with the award-winning publishers of Black Kansas city magazine, formerly Minority Success (www.blackkansascitymag.com) in this ground-breaking, first time in history event, which stands to put as much as $1 million in revenues directly into the cash registers of black-owned Kansas City business.

How?

Harnessing the massive power of exposure, credibility, and advertising by black-owned KC businesses; specifically and especially, from the KC Star media powerhouse, has never been done –or some may say permitted- before.

Until now, for hundreds of years, black-owned Kansas City-based businesses were red-lined, (not merely geographically, but economically as well).  And, subsequently missed out on the long-term ROI, or return on/of investment which white-owned KC businesses benefit from when it comes to ‘positive’ press, ‘positive’ media, ‘mainstream’ advertising, as well as, ‘diverse’ and ‘inclusive’ customer markets -which their white business counterparts brag about in mainstream media today, aka DEI and gentrification.

Contrarily, most often, black businesses, have black customers, and are red-lined out of white spaces; from office space and commercial/retail shop locations to advertising, marketing, branding, and exposure.

Conversely, white Kansas City has also missed out on the inherent benefits of black-owned businesses.  “Black-owned” is trending globally today; and has become synonymous with, “highly-competitive” pricing, authentic experience, mainstream, current, original, Iconic, and historic Kansas City is full of black trailblazers.

For example Unbothered, and unaware, white KC residents, have spent ‘millions’ on ‘black’ art from places like IKEA and The World Market, but have missed out on the real-life acclaimed true-black artists living right next door.

(Currently; though poorly promoted, The Nelson Museum is having its “first” black local art exhibit; you should check that out as well.)

“Readers are in store for an eye-opening experience.  KC Star readers; are currently, mostly white, and for 141-years, have been missing out on some amazing local treasures, literally 35% of the Kansas City Special Sauce, and while they shop at ‘The World Market’ and IKEA, they’ve missed the real-black artists right next door.

I urge you to celebrate with us: visit, support, shop, and buy from this section, all holiday season, and beyond.  Don’t continue to miss out.  This Historic 2021 Holiday Season I hope we can all extend a warm, long-awaited welcome to our neighbors. We did it!”  –Kareem Jackson, Publisher@BlackKansasCityMag.com
